The European Union has enacted Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, amending Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 to establish a comprehensive European Digital Identity Framework. This regulation aims to facilitate secure, user-controlled digital identities for Union citizens and residents, enabling access to both public and private services across Member States. The regulation emphasises the creation and management of European Digital Identity Wallets, which will allow users to authenticate and share personal data safely while retaining control over their identity information.

Member States are mandated to provide at least one European Digital Identity Wallet within 24 months and must ensure that these digital identities comply with rigorous security measures. The framework promotes interoperability, safeguarding personal data against unauthorised access while setting forth clear provisions for the legal recognition of electronic signatures and electronic attestations of attributes. These initiatives are designed to enhance trust and transparency in digital interactions throughout the EU.
